The Returned Man in On Spec Magazine

My story "The Returned Man" is out in the latest issue of On Spec Magazine (Issue #102). It's available in digital and paper editions at On Spec's website.

On Spec is an award-winning Canadian magazine of Science Fiction, Fantasy and other Speculative Fiction.

Aurora Award Nominations

Aurora Award Nominations are now open and my short story "Charlie" is eligible for nominating for Best Short Fiction - English. "Charlie" appeared in A Quiet Shelter There, a benefit anthology for homeless animals. During the nomination period, "Charlie" will be available to read on my website.

The Auroras are cool awards because readers get to participate!

Anyone who is a member of the Canadian Science Fiction and Fantasy Association (CSFFA) can nominate and vote for the awards. Membership is $10, and includes a voter's package which includes a copy of all nominated works. If you're a fan of the genre, your $10 membership gets you way more than $10 worth of reading.

So nominate your favorite Canadian fantasy or science fiction books and stories of the year!

Nominations close March 19. See the Aurora Awards website for membership details and the eligible works in all categories.

A Quiet Shelter There anthology out and Publisher's Weekly Review

It's here! A Quiet Shelter There, a benefit anthology for Friends of Homeless Animals(FOHA), contains speculative stories all about companion and service animals. 70% of the proceeds go to FOHA, but other animal shelters/rescues can purchase it at a discount if they would like to use it for their own fundraising.

Publisher's weekly just reviewed it, and with a lovely comment about my story.

Right now, it's just out in paperback. Ebooks coming.

What Makes the Tesseracts Series Special?

If you are just discovering the Tesseracts Series for the first time, or reacquainting yourself with this Canadian literary legacy, here are some key points:

The Tesseracts series is focussed on speculative fiction: science fiction, fantasy and horror.

The first Tesseracts anthology was edited by the late Judith Merril.

Each year EDGE Science Fiction and Fantasy Publishing chooses a team of editors - which keeps the collections fresh, new and ever changing - from among the best of Canada’s writers, publishers and critics. The editors then select innovative and futuristic short fiction and poetry from established and emerging voices of Canadian speculative fiction.

Since its publication in 1985, more than 315 Canadian authors, editors, translators and special guests have contributed 529 short stories, poems, editorials and forwards to the series.

Each volume of the Tesseracts series features established as well as emerging authors. Some of Canada's best known fiction writers have been published within the pages of these volumes - including Margaret Atwood, Susan Swan, and Hugo and Nebula award winning authors William Gibson, Spider Robinson, and Robert J. Sawyer. (For a listing of all contibutors see here).

The entire series includes Tesseracts One through Eighteen, plus Tesseracts Q, which features translations of works by some of Canada's top francophone writers of science fiction and fantasy.

The series has won the prestigious Canadian Aurora Award.
